What you’ll be able to do
Perform a hypothesis-driven history and complete a targeted limb and spinal exam
Develop and present a diagnosis and treatment plan and/or surgical indications for common orthopedic conditions/injuries
Read and interpret plain radiographs of the limbs an spine
Correctly interpret imaging and laboratory findings and communicate results to patients and team members
Develop and implement effective patient management plans
Complete written documentation in a comprehensive, concise, accurate and timely manner
Review, interpret, and present current literature to support patient care
Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and non-physician team members
Communicate and collaborate with consultants and/or primary team and other providers to coordinate care
Engage patients in shared decision making regarding tests, orders, and procedures
Avoid medical jargon when communicating with patients and families
Recognize limitations and seek assistance as appropriate
Understand the process of obtaining informed consent prior to surgical intervention
Recognize perioperative conditions that determine patient level of care and interpret physiologic changes that require changing that level of care
Perform minor procedures with supervision
Demonstrate the ability to manage time and understand, access, and utilize the resources and systems necessary to provide optimal patient care
Engage Phase 2 medical students in patient management plans and decision making regarding tests, orders, and procedures, and review of current literature

the class
Direct patient care involving a spectrum of orthopedic conditions in inpatient and ambulatory settings, with supervision by orthopedic surgery senior residents, fellows, and attending physicians. Participate in regularly scheduled supervisor-student meetings, which involve some or all the following: rounding on service patients, participating in scheduled operative procedures, presenting cases and teaching topics, and discussing patient cases. As needed, engage in independent reading about patient conditions and prepare for direct patient. Present a case of interest the student was involved in and a brief literature review on the treatment or condition. Other patient care-related learning activities as assigned by instructors; these are dependent on the individual student, the patients under the student's care, and the location.
