Inpatient Acting Internship - Orthopedics
Acting internship providing medical students with in-depth exposure to inpatient and operative management of complicated orthopedic surgical patients at the intern level.

Summary
What you’ll be able to do
Perform complete admission or pre-operative history and physicals, and document these in themedical chart.
Formulate a differential diagnosis and develop a diagnostic plan, including laboratory and imaging modalities
Analyze and interpret imaging and laboratory findings in context of patient presentation
Present patients to healthcare team in a well-organized manner that highlights pertinent positives and negatives, gives justification to diagnostic plan, and provides interpretation of results.
Write post-operative, admitting, and daily progress notes in the standard format on patients you are rounding on.
Write and justify orders based on working diagnosis and cost-effectivenes
Adjust home medications for preoperative and immediate post-operative situations.
Summarize patient’s hospital course during rounds and manage day-to-day care.
Research and present current literature to support patient care.
Conduct a detailed preoperative assessment of assigned patients
Monitor and evaluate patients for common post-operative complications, develop treatment plansand present these to the team
Based on case load, develop clinically relevant questions to further your and your colleagues’ learning.
Give and receive patient handovers.
Write succinct yet thorough transfer notes and discharge summaries
Communicate effectively with inter-professional team members.
Request consultative services
Collaborate with consultants and other providers to coordinate patient care
Perform intern-level procedures with appropriate supervision.
Take ownership for assigned patients and thus be identified as a primary inpatient provider by team and family.
Demonstrate a comprehensive approach to the care of surgical patients beginning with their initialconsultation in clinic or admission to the hospital, and culminating with successful transfer of patient to next level of care or discharge
Demonstrate advancement in basic surgical skills, including, but not limited to, knot tying and simple suturing
Take call once weekly between 1800-2100.

This acting internship will provide medical students with an in-depth exposure to inpatient and operative management of complicated orthopedic surgical patients. The student will work under the direct supervision of a senior resident, fellows, and faculty. This rotation will provide the student with the opportunity to function at the intern level and play an active role in inpatient management of surgical patients.
