Environmental Health and Advocacy
Environmental Health and Advocacy explores environmental toxins and their health impacts. It trains students to take environmental histories and apply environmental medicine clinically and in communities.
Summary
What you’ll be able to do
Describe how various categories of environmental toxicants (including carcinogens, mutagens, teratogens, neurotoxins, and endocrine disrupters) affect human health
Demonstrate skill in taking a robust patient history by understanding the potential toxicants in a patient’s environment
Practice risk communication strategies, simulating patient and population encounters
Describe why certain populations, including children, pregnant women, the elderly and marginalized populations are more vulnerable to environmental exposure
Discuss the role and approaches to engaging key stakeholders in environmental justice issues, including consumer/advocacy groups, community organizations, governmental organizations, corporations, and various industries/professions
Identify credible evidence and appraise scientific literature to address both patient and population-level environmental health issues
Identify the positive and negative impact of various public policies on environmental justice
Discuss opportunities for physician advocacy across the social ecological framework to address environmental issues incorporating a systems-thinking lens
