Introduction to the study of political violence in the modern world. Political conflicts are often disputed through the use of force: countries fight wars; governments combat insurgent groups, militias, and criminal organizations; states repress their citizens; communal violence breaks out among social groups. Examines the commonalities that underpin these forms of political violence and the differences that separate them. Analyzes the causes and consequences of violence and discusses strategies to resolve violent conflicts and build peace. In doing so, interrogates foundational theories of political violence and explores cutting-edge approaches to the study of armed conflict. Covers the variety of research methods used to study political violence, including both qualitative and quantitative approaches at the sub- and cross-national levels of analysis.
