What you’ll be able to do

  • Identify the clinical presentations and manifestations of conditions encountered in emergency medicine patients across the following age groups: infant, child, adolescent, adult, and elderly.

  • Obtain a complete medical history.

  • Perform a physical examination on the following types of patient encounters: emergent pediatric, emergent adult, emergent behavioral health, emergent women's health.

  • Perform the following technical skills: laceration repair, incision and drainage, and splint placement.

  • Interpret diagnostic tests used in the evaluation of emergency medicine patients, including the following: laboratory and diagnostic tests, X-rays, and 12-lead EKG tests.

  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families.

  • Provide education to patients on topics such as prevention pharmacotherapeutics or lifestyle changes.

  • Integrate cultural humility into patient care by acknowledging cultural, linguistic, and health literacy factors.

  • Formulate a differential diagnosis for common symptoms/conditions encountered in emergency medicine.

  • Formulate appropriate diagnostic and/or therapeutic patient care plan.

  • Effectively engage in oral communication with members of the healthcare team, ensuring seamless coordination of patient care.

  • Display professional behavior in the medical setting as indicated in the preceptorship evaluation.
