What you’ll be able to do

  • Identify the clinical presentations and manifestations of conditions encountered in internal medicine patients across the following age groups: adult and elderly.

  • Obtain a complete medical history.

  • Perform a physical examination for the following types of patient encounters: preventative adult, acute-problem focused, chronic-problem focused, and behavioral health.

  • Manage patients with these chronic conditions: hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and depression.

  • Interpret common diagnostic/screening tests and imaging studies used in the evaluation of internal medicine patients, such as the following: administer and interpret the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 and administer and interpret the General Anxiety Disorder 7.

  • Develop effective communication skills to establish rapport with patients and their families.

  • Provide education to patients on topics such as prevention, pharmacotherapeutics, or lifestyle changes.

  • Integrate cultural humility into patient care by acknowledging cultural, linguistic, and health literacy factors.

  • Formulate a differential diagnosis for conditions encountered in internal medicine.

  • Formulate appropriate diagnostic and/or therapeutic patient care plans.

  • Effectively engage in oral communication with members of the healthcare team, ensuring seamless coordination of patient care.

  • Display professional behavior in the medical setting as indicated in the preceptorship evaluation.
