What you’ll be able to do
Perform a hypothesis driven history and complete a targeted exam.
Develop and present a weighted differential diagnosis.
Using clinical evidence, adapt and justify the working diagnosis.
Present a diagnostic plan including laboratory and imaging modalities.
Correctly interpret imaging and laboratory findings and communicate results to patients and team members.
Complete written documentation in a comprehensive, concise, accurate and timely manner.
Review, interpret and present current literature to support patient care.
Develop clinically relevant questions to advance learning.
Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians and non-physician team members.
Communicate and collaborate with consultants and/or primary team and other providers to coordinate care.
Engage patients in shared decision making regarding tests, orders and procedures.
Avoid medical jargon when communicating with patients and families.
Recognize limitations and seek assistance as appropriate.
Take an accurate exam and history pertaining to common allergic disorders (e.g. allergic rhinitis, drug allergy, food allergy) and asthma.
Recognize characteristic physical findings of respiratory allergy and skin disease.
Diagnose asthma and grade severity according to national guidelines.
Describe the relationship between food-specific IgE(Immunoglobulin E) and food allergy.
Describe signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and appropriate therapy.
Describe common presentations for immuno-deficiencies involving B cells, T cells, complement and neutrophils.
Recognize airway obstruction on spirometry.

Supervised activities include seeing patients in outpatient clinics, observing procedures and attending weekly pediatric allergy conferences. Hands-on clerkship experience in this sub-specialty involves both very common and uncommon diseases in pediatrics in allergy and immunology. Specific topics that are covered include food allergy, asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and primary immune deficiency. As these diseases are increasing in prevalence and have broad impacts on child health, this experience is ideal preparation for careers in pediatric and medical specialties, or surgical specialties.
