CHILD ABUSE PEDIATRICS ELECTIVE

Course Description

Gain essential skills and knowledge to effectively recognize, diagnose, and treat cases of child maltreatment. Identify medical evidence that should raise reasonable suspicion of child abuse and neglect and become familiar with mandatory reporting requirements, including how to make a report to Child Protective Services and Law Enforcement. Collect special history, examination, laboratory, and imaging information necessary in cases of suspected child maltreatment. Develop skills to thoroughly document examination findings using written notes, drawings, and forensic photography. Practice communication skills when dealing with high-stress medical situations.
