What you’ll be able to do

  • Develop skills with which to efficiently learn operatic and musical theater material in various languages.

  • Synthesize singing, language, musicality, style, and acting values to effectively perform an excerpt from an operatic or musical theater role.

  • Develop stagecraft skills in general as well as those particular to opera and musical theater.

  • Fluidly work back and forth between non-English language texts and their English translations, arriving at a sense of "owning the text".

  • Integrate historical and cultural research into role preparation.

  • Apply character-specific research to role preparation.

  • Integrate other areas of music and voice study (music history, music theory, period vocal style) into role preparation.

  • Describe symbiotic relationship between acting and singing in operatic and musical theater performance.
