Structure and Properties of Advanced Electronic Materials
Graduate course preparing students for research in electronic materials by examining how physical structure affects electronic properties and covering state-of-the-art advanced materials.
Summary
Recent recorded grades — Fall 2021: 3.62 GPA, 76.9% A/AB (n=13 letter grades); Fall 2023: 3.50 GPA, 68.8% A/AB (n=16 letter grades); Fall 2025: 3.55 GPA, 70.0% A/AB (n=10 letter grades).
What you’ll be able to do
Examine the physical and electronic structure relationships of advanced electronic materials
Analytically deduce how the physical structure and composition of a material affect its electronic structure and properties employing concepts pertaining to quantum mechanics, bonding, crystal structure, spin, symmetry, and dimensionality
Utilize concepts and tools including: experimental measurements, scientific literature, and models/calculations of energy and band structure, dielectric spectra, and transport phenomena
Analyze conventional bulk zinc-blende and wurtzite semiconductors; oxides; Heuslers; carbon and 2D nanomaterials; polycrystalline and disordered materials; organic semiconducting molecules and crystals; and up-and-coming and next-generation electronic materials
Connect fundamental principles to motivations from device applications (field effect transistors; light emitting devices; and photovoltaics)
