Summary
What you’ll be able to do
Become familiar with the evaluation and management of acute and chronic, often complex, cardiovascular conditions such as arrhythmias, MI, heart failure, valvular disease and shock that occur in adult patients hospitalized for other illnesses, traumatic injuries or surgery.
Assess preoperative risk for non-cardiac surgery.
Learn the indications for and data provided by common cardiac diagnostic tests including electrocardiogram (ECG), echo, stress tests, and coronary angiography.
Learn the principles of consultation and how to function effectively in this role.
Demonstrate competency in the performance of cardiovascular history and physical examinations.
Accurately read and interpret normal ECGs with common abnormalities.
Correlate cardiac laboratory information, such as: diagnostic coronary angiography, hemodynamic monitoring, and results in electrophysiological testing.
Recognize the major signs and symptoms of cardiac disease.
Evaluate and recommend appropriate diagnostic testing for common cardiovascular conditions.
Witness cardiac catheterizations, various types of stress testing, and echocardiograms.
Accurately interpret the results of various cardiovascular diagnostic tools.
Recognize the most efficient and effective methods of treatment for a variety of common cardiovascular conditions.
Develop in-depth skill in obtaining a cardiovascular history.
Develop in-depth skill in performing physical examinations relevant to cardiovascular disease.
Identify appropriate laboratory, procedural, and diagnostic testing for common cardiovascular diseases and become proficient at interpretation of the results.
Improve skill of interpreting ECGs as a part of the evaluation of patients with heart disease.
Learn special procedures utilized in evaluation and measurement of patients with cardiovascular disease, including stress tests, echocardiograms, cardiac catherizations and other coronary interventions.
Acquire knowledge of the methods utilized in the clinical management of patients with cardiovascular disease, particularly coronary disease, heart failure and arrhythmias.

Opportunities to learn the process involving the evaluation and management of a full spectrum of acute and chronic cardiovascular diseases, as well as preoperative consultation for hospitalized adult patients. Become familiar with the principles of effective consultation and how to operationalize this role, through evaluating patients, presenting relevant data, providing effective cardiac consultation as an integral member of a fast-paced inpatient team. Essential skills are taught, including: interpreting 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs) and cardiac rhythm data from telemetry with assistance, observing select cardiac diagnostic tests and reading studies with faculty or fellows. Attendance at weekly Cardiovascular Medicine Grand Rounds is required.
