  • Formulate prevention and elimination strategies and describe their limitations.

  • Summarize the pathophysiology of HIV infection.

  • Identify different diagnostic and follow-up tests for HIV/AIDS.

  • Recognize, diagnose, and treat acute HIV infection.

  • Summarize the guidelines on whom to treat, when to treat, and which antiretroviral treatment to choose.

  • Identify the different classes of HIV medications and their mechanisms of action.

  • List the principles of HAART resistance, tests, and alternate treatments.

  • Identify the clinical presentation, diagnoses, and management of common opportunistic infections.

  • Manage HIV-HCV and HIV-HBV co-infections.

  • Perform a history and physical examination of HIV patients.

  • Summarize the team approach to management for HIV patients and the critical importance of ancillary health care professionals in the care of HIV/AIDS patients.

  • Coordinate care with HIV pharmacists, nurses, social workers, and other health care professionals.
