First-year intensive Yiddish course for graduates covering speaking, listening, reading, writing, and Yiddish culture.
Summary
What you’ll be able to do
Communicate in Yiddish at the multi-sentence level in writing and orally in the past, present, future, imperative, and conditional tenses.
Understand a vocabulary of 500+ Yiddish words and decipher and interpret Yiddish texts about a range of topics related to daily life (both historically and in the present) and about topics relevant to the graduate student’s research focus.
Implement learning strategies when engaging with Yiddish-language sources to discern and create meaning and to recognize grammar patterns and semantic nuances.
Demonstrate familiarity with various forms of Yiddish cultural expression and with various online databases of newspapers, literature, and archival materials relevant to conducting research in Yiddish.
Negotiate meaning across language and culture and draw comparisons between Yiddish-speaking cultures and those of their own.
Demonstrate ability to transliterate Yiddish-language titles and sentences according to YIVO standard and to translate sentences into English.
