Carbonate Geology
A graduate-level course providing a comprehensive survey of the processes and products of carbonate sedimentation, including their role in the global carbon cycle.
Summary
Recent recorded grades — Spring 2019: 3.67 GPA, 83.3% A/AB (n=6 letter grades).
What you’ll be able to do
Recognize and describe in hand samples and in thin sections the biotic and abiotic constituents of carbonate sediments and rocks.
Characterize the physical and chemical properties of the environments in which carbonate sedi-ments form.
Describe the diagenetic processes that occur in carbonates and recognize the products of these diagenetic processes in hand samples and thin sections.
Generate hypotheses for the specific origin and diagenetic history of carbonate rocks.
Generate predictive models for the spatial and temporal distribution and properties of carbonate sed-iments and sedimentary deposits.
Analyze geologic databases in order to describe and quantify the spatial and temporal distribution of carbonate sediments in the rock record.
