Summary

What you’ll be able to do

  • Implement and analyze fundamental data structures including array-based lists, linked lists, stacks, queues, binary search trees, and hash tables in Java, understanding their efficiency trade-offs and appropriate use cases for different problem contexts.

  • Apply asymptotic analysis using Big O notation to evaluate algorithm efficiency, compare time and space complexity trade-offs, and make informed decisions about data structure and algorithm selection.

  • Design and implement recursive solutions for problems involving recursive data structures and algorithms, understanding the relationship between recursion and iteration and their performance implications.

  • Implement and compare searching and sorting algorithms, including binary search and sorting algorithms with different complexity classes (O(n²) and O(n log n)), understanding their requirements, performance characteristics, and appropriate applications.

  • Design object-oriented software using interfaces, abstract classes, and inheritance to create flexible, maintainable data structure implementations that separate abstract behavior from concrete implementation.

  • Apply professional software development practices including version control with Git (branching, merging, collaboration), unit testing with JUnit, code documentation with Javadoc, and peer code review to produce high-quality, maintainable software.

  • Evaluate and apply data structures from the Java Collections Framework (ArrayList, TreeMap, PriorityQueue) as black boxes, understanding when to implement custom structures versus using library implementations and how to extend existing codebases professionally.
