Subseasonal to Seasonal Variability of Earth's Climate
Introduction to subseasonal to seasonal (S2S) climate variability, covering MJO, ENSO, teleconnections, extratropical patterns, atmospheric blocking, stratospheric impacts, and predictability.
Summary
What you’ll be able to do
Identify the primary drivers of subseasonal to seasonal variability and predictability, including their mechanisms, interactions, impacts, and known challenges.
Analyze scientific research to understand how previous investigators approach scientific problems and communicate the scientific process in the existing literature.
Articulate, critique, and elaborate the theories, research methods, and approaches to scientific inquiry.
Identify a scientific problem through reading the literature and finding links between the student’s research interests and the topics of the course.
Investigate a scientific problem through experimental design and the scientific process.

Student experience
the class
Introduction to subseasonal to seasonal (S2S) climate variability, including the dynamics and interactions between the Madden-Julian Oscillation, El Niño-Southern Oscillation, and tropical-extratropical teleconnections. Learn about extratropical climate patterns and atmospheric blocking, and how tropical climate patterns impact extratropical climate variability. The impact of the stratosphere on S2S timescales is also explored, as well as S2S predictability and S2S global impacts. A focus on scientific literature provides the opportunity to advance skills in reading and interpreting journal articles.
